As a whole, however, activity of the company from the very beginning of existence proceeded in the conditions of a severe competition to other European countries, and especially England.

Englishmen cherished for a long time dream to take hold of the Dutch colony. In 1664, after four decades after the beginning of active colonisation by Dutches of the New Netherlands, in a bay of New Amsterdam the English ships come and direct guns on the settlement yet ready to struggle against such strong opponent. The governor P.Stejvesant surrenders on favour to the enemy, and Holland loses the possession in this region. (By the way, P.Stejvesant has based in 1658 near to New Amsterdam a small village named it New Haarlem in honour of the Dutch city of Haarlem. In the beginning it was settlement with beautiful - on Dutch manners - cottages, and only in the XX-th century it has turned to today's Harlem with all its problems.)

After capture by Englishmen of the New Netherlands the centre of the former Dutch colony receives the new and definitive name: on a place of New Amsterdam on cards there is New York - New York.

The English-Dutch war which has Inflamed in 1665, as is known, has not changed a situation, however Dutches nevertheless have managed to manage to get at Englishmen returning of Surinam instead of the colony taken away from them in the North America.

Almost three hundred years operated Surinam the Netherlands colonial officials. And only in 1954 in this South American country own parliament, the government and local authorities for the first time have been generated. However realisation of external relations, defence questions remained in hands of Dutches. They kept also key positions in economy. Only in 1975 the Netherlands has been compelled to give to Surinam independence.

Unique for today a colony of the Netherlands there are Antilles located in Caribbean sea, to the north of Venezuela.
